When exploring senior care options, two common choices are Adult Family Homes (AFHs) and Assisted Living communities. Both provide care and support, but the environment and level of personalization are very different.

Adult Family Homes

  • Small, residential setting (usually up to 6 residents)

  • Personalized, one-on-one care with low staff-to-resident ratios

  • Home-cooked meals, daily assistance, and a family-like atmosphere

  • 24/7 supervision in a comfortable, home-like environment

  • Often more affordable than larger facilities

Assisted Living

  • Larger communities with dozens (or even hundreds) of residents

  • Private apartments or suites with access to common areas

  • Assistance with daily activities, medication, meals, and housekeeping

  • Social programs, group activities, outings, and amenities

  • More structured lifestyle but less individualized care

Key Difference

  • Adult Family Homes = intimate, home-like care with more personal attention.

  • Assisted Living = larger community setting with more amenities and social opportunities.

Choosing the Right Fit

  • Choose an Adult Family Home if your loved one needs closer supervision, prefers a smaller setting, or would thrive with highly personalized care.

  • Choose Assisted Living if they value independence, want access to a wide range of activities, and enjoy being part of a larger community.
